Using your phone behind the wheel can significantly increase the chances of an accident. However, there are many other distractions that you need to avoid while driving. Sadly, some drivers do not realize how easy it is to become distracted, which sometimes leads to a devastating accident. Even taking one’s eyes off of the road for a few seconds can lead to life-altering consequences.

If a distracted driver causes you or a loved one to suffer a serious injury, you need to hold them accountable and go over the details of the accident.

Various examples of distracted driving

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention covers some of the different reasons why drivers become distracted. Aside from texting and talking on the phone, some people become distracted while using electronic devices to find directions. Electronic devices can cause drivers to take their eyes off the road, lose mental focus and take their hands off of the steering wheel.

Distracted driving can also occur because a driver converses with someone riding in the vehicle, tries to eat food while driving, applies makeup or adjusts the volume.

The consequences of distracted driving

From manual distractions to cognitive and visual distractions, drivers need to avoid anything that interferes with their ability to operate a vehicle safely. Distracted driving crashes are often especially devastating, whether they involve high speeds or a head-on collision. The victims of these crashes could struggle with immobility, mental trauma, lost wages and medical bills, among other difficulties. Unfortunately, more of these accidents will take place, and distracted driving accident victims deserve a voice.
