Mediation For Northern Minnesota Personal Injury And Wrongful Death Disputes
Brooks Hazelton is a partner at Hazelton Law Group, a northern Minnesota injury law firm in Bemidji and Grand Rapids. Brooks’ law practice focuses on representing personal injury and wrongful death victims’ families. Over the past 11 years, he has tried many cases to jury verdicts and strongly advocates for his clients. He is a licensed attorney in Minnesota and Alaska State Courts. He is also licensed in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota and Alaska. He received the National Trial Lawyers Association Top 40 under 40 Civil Plaintiffs Attorney honor every year since 2019 and recently received the status of a Super Lawyers 2024 Rising Star. Brooks has litigated to verdict and settled many multi-million-dollar recoveries from complex and catastrophic injury claims, including semi-tractor-trailer collisions, auto collisions, and injuries and deaths caused by defective products. He has resolved hundreds of injury claims over his career. Through his experience as a trial lawyer, Brooks values civility and professionalism in the legal process. He believes alternative dispute resolutions, like mediation, often provide significant benefits in these emotionally charged and financially taxing cases.
In addition to his trial practice, Brooks serves as a mediator in personal injury and wrongful death disputes, offering a faster, more cost-effective resolution. He is a qualified neutral on the Minnesota Supreme Court’s civil mediation roster and has demonstrated the required training and ongoing commitment to the process, including the required 30-hour General Civil Mediation Skills training and ongoing continuing education needed to maintain his qualified neutral status. Brooks is also mutually selected as a mediator.
Brooks finds the biggest impediment to resolution is communication. There are usually good people represented by hard-working and caring advocates on both sides of a dispute. Brooks follows the mantra, “Be hard on the problem, not on the person.” When we can get communication going, the issues are framed and understood, and resolution can become a reality.
Brooks carefully prepares for each mediation by reviewing case details and listening to all parties, working towards settlements that meet their needs.
